A true drivers’ car, the focus is evident before you start the
engine, with a dashboard and centre console that are angled towards you.
Even after two or three hours of driving, you’ll step out of the car
feeling as relaxed and rested as when you began your journey. Design and
driving experience are in total harmony.
Both inside and out of the new S90, you can feel the meticulous care and consideration. From the rare Nordic timber to the subtle contour line on the bonnet, every detail is a premium expression of true Scandinavian craftsmanship.
The Volvo S90 T8 Twin Engine plug-in hybrid will offer 394hp from combining a four-cylinder turbocharged and supercharged 318hp 2-litre petrol engine with an 80hp electric motor and a 46hp crankshaft-mounted starter generator, all of them paired with a eight-speed automatic gearbox. Power goes to all four wheels.
The S90’s cabin has cues taken from the XC90, with extensive use of natural materials, including a slab of wood that forms a large part of the fascia. The dashboard is again dominated by the portrait-layout infotainment screen, which incorporates satellite navigation and audio, along with controls for several of the car’s systems, including heating and ventilation.
Other XC90 technologies will also feature on the S90. The saloon gets the SUV’s Pilot Assist semi-autonomous driving functionality, which keeps the car aligned between motorway road markings at speeds of up to 80mph. It also adds a new feature to Volvo’s City Safety system: large animal detection, which can detect creatures like elk, horses and moose during the day or night, and either warns the driver or primes the brakes to help avoid a collision.
It's also set to be available with what Volvo calls ‘semi-autononmous’ driving capability. This will make gentle steering inputs to keep the car in lane on the motorway at speeds of up to 130km/h. Volvo describes it as “another step towards full autonomous drive”.
Speaking about the car, Volvo's senior vice-president of research and development Dr Peter Mertens said: “The S90 has taken a big stride forwards in terms of driving dynamics, performance and ride. We’ve completely redesigned the Volvo driving experience from the ground up to deliver a sense of precision, engaging control and comfort.”
The new S90 detects pedestrians, cyclists and – a world first – large animals on the road. Your car warns you and, if necessary, brakes if you don’t intervene, even in the dark. It can also work out whether there’s a collision risk if you’re approaching slower moving or stationary vehicles.
Volvo Cars’ world-first, run-off road mitigation with steer assist technology operates at higher speeds, working out if you stray over lane markings to the road edge. It will assist steering, putting you back on a safer path. There are times when having a helping hand with driving makes life more relaxed and safer.
Pilot Assist automatically maintains a set speed or distance to the car in front, as well as giving gentle steering inputs to keep you properly aligned within your lane markings.
